Whether you’re living with a hernia, preparing for surgery, or rebuilding strength afterwards, our hernia rehabilitation exercises are here to help. These exercises are designed to strengthen your abdominal muscles before surgery and aid recovery, comfort, and scar healing post-surgery.

At Hernia Clinic Hampshire, we have worked with patients to design these bespoke hernia rehab exercises for patients of all fitness levels

All you need to start is a mat or a large towel and some space.

  • Suitable for all fitness levels — from young athletes to older adults who want safe, gentle recovery. Videos progress in difficulty
  • All you need is a mat or towel and a little space.
  • Follow at your own pace — you can start before or after surgery, and easily fit sessions in around your schedule.
  • We highly recommend you wear hernia supports while performing these exercises pre-surgery (pads in) and for the initial period post-surgery (pads out). They will help support the hernia/repair site during physical activity.

Our dedication to patient-focused care has driven our development of this programme. We want to work with you to achieve excellent results.

How Do Exercises Improve My Hernia Repair Result?

Improving Strength, Lowering Risk

Our hernia rehabilitation exercises help with strengthening and re-strengthening your core muscles which reduces the risk of the hernia coming back.

Improving Long-term Comfort

The exercises improve comfort in your abdominal muscles and groin through physical exercise both before and after hernia surgery. They build strength and help to influence how the scar remodels – in particular, lines of tension caused by stretching and exercise. They help improve long-term comfort in the area of surgery by by improving the flexibility of healing tissue

While surgery is the only way to fix a hernia, these are also helpful exercises for hernias and strengthening your abdominal muscles even before having surgery.

If you are a surgery patient with Hernia Clinic Hampshire, this programme is included within your package.

If you would like to find out more about becoming a patient, please see our Hernia Surgery Information.

What's Included in This Programme?

With this programme, you gain access to a number of pre-recorded video sessions with an instructor guiding you through the various exercises.

These videos are designed to be repeatable and short enough to easily fit into your schedule.

Do I Need Special Equipment?

No not really, but access to the following can help:

  • An armless chair or edge of the bed to sit on
  • A mat such as a yoga mat or just a simple towel
  • An exercise band (Or use a tie from a dressing gown or 1m length of rope)
  • A cushion (if not using a mat)

How Long Should I Do These Exercises?

Pre-surgery

We recommend that you begin using these exercises before your surgery to pre-condition the muscles involved and help with the post-surgery recovery. Do this with the hernia support in place (plus pad on the side if you have a groin hernia).

Post-surgery

Start gently using them with the support only (no pad) from day 2 or 3 after your surgery or as you feel ready. 93% of our patients surveyed said wearing the hernia supports helped them feel more confident returning to activity.

For the first 1-2 weeks, they increase blood flow to your repair site to aid wound healing.

As the videos progress, they become more energetic and help strengthen your wound. They influence how your scar remodels which becomes the most active at 4-6 weeks post-surgery. This improves the flexibility and long-term comfort of your scar.

3-6 months after surgery

You should continue doing these exercises as instructed for up to 6 months to get through the active phase of scar remodelling and create a strong, comfortable repair. This is crucial to improving long term comfort in the repair.

The comfort of your scar can be influenced for 12 months post-surgery.

If you feel any discomfort or tugging develop months post your hernia repair, use the post hernia surgery exercises for 2-3 months. This should settle any discomfort.
